WELFARE SQUARE
Since its humble beginnings in the midst of the Great Depression, Welfare Square has emerged as a powerful example of what The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does throughout the world to care for the poor, foster self-reliance, and provide meaningful opportunities for work and service. Welfare Square is a modern facility comprised of a towering, 178-foot-tall grain elevator, a large storehouse, a bakery, a cannery, a milk processing operation, a thrift store, and an employment center—all designed to help people help themselves.
President Thomas S. Monson, First Counselor in the First Presidency of the Church, invited all to "come to Salt Lake City and visit Welfare Square. Your eyes will glow a little brighter, your heart will beat a little faster, and life itself will acquire a new depth of meaning" (in Conference Report, Oct. 1977, 11).
Free, one-hour tours explaining the history and purpose of Church welfare are conducted Monday through Friday.Address:780 West 800 SouthSalt Lake City, Utah 84104Phone number(s):Call 1-801-240-1245 for more information.Schedule:Tours Available April to OctoberThe courtesy shuttle van leaves at 10:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Monday through Friday (except holidays) from the north gate of Temple Square. 1. Thanks for all the ideas. I love your idea of having themed weeks and am starting this coming week with Bug Week.

I took my kids to Springville's Children's Art Festival today (free activity) where they made bugs out of clothespins, tissue paper, pipe cleaners, and googly eyes. I'm going to take it one step further and have the kids make a mobile using an embroidery hoop to hold their bugs.

If you haven't heard of the Children's Art Festival you should look for it next year. It's only one day. There were 18 booths where the kids made different things. These are some of the things they did:

    pinwheels
marble art -ask and I'll tell you what this is
    block printing
    clothespin bugs
    garden murals
    Indian wish necklaces
    texture rubbings
    stamping
    printmaking
    pointillism
    Picasso fish

  2. There is one thing that I have done this spring with my two little kids ages 3 1/2 and 17 months old. I had them do a lot of different art projects using things like watercolor, acrylics, oils, oil pastels, conte' crayons, chalk pastels, charcoal, etc... I then mounted them on colored poster board and signed them up for a display at the Spanish Fork Library. During the month of June their theme was being creative so they let us use their display. My little kids were so excited to use all the different mediums and then to actually have an art show in the library just for them. Even my 17 month old was excited. I don't know if other libraries have displays that kids can use but it's worth checking it out.

I have already started their next project for another display at the library. We have been going on nature walks and gathering different flowers and leaves to press. My 17 month old likes to pick the flowers and my 3 1/2 year old likes to pick the flowers, press them, and see the final result. I plan on finding books at the library that are about Utah wildflowers for my kids and then have them mount them on scrapbook paper for the display. When the display is over I can just stick them in their scrapbooks. It will be easy for them to make flowers out of tissue paper and pipe cleaners too. They also have their own flower gardens and help me take care of our vegetable garden.
